Snow Observations From Paul Huddleston, DDS
Dear Patients,
I am going to depart from writing about dentistry for a moment, and share with you my personal observations about snow.
Snow evokes so many images for people: faces of children holding their collective breath while watching the news for school closures, drivers in vehicles madly navigating their way home, store shelves being emptied by people fearing the worst, and Red Riders flying down the icy hills of Seattle, to name a few.
Of course, for some of you it brings to mind the ultimate excuse for postponing a dental appointment. It certainly trumps a flat tire, or the dog swallowing car keys: a couple of excuses we sometimes hear. However, this snowfall left no room for doubt, and I too was thankful for the brief time away from the office.
For me, the most poignant picture is that of my family gathered around a fire in our living room playing the timeless game Operation during a power outage, and soaking in the stillness. No television, no music, no computers, no sound of the washer or dryer; just stillness. The distractions in our very busy life with four children faded for several hours, and we shifted into a state of shared camaraderie and simple, slowed, and savored enjoyment.
The lights did go on, eventually, but the treasured time lives on in my mind. Strive for these moments, for they are the ones that really count.
